Theology Happy Hour: October 13th
Young Adult Anglicans Calgary invites all young adults aged 18-39 to join us on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, for our next Theology Happy Hour! RSVP below!
Speaker: The Rev. Dr. Jane Rowland
We’ll be gathering from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at El Furniture Warehouse on Stephen Avenue downtown.
Topic: What’s in your God box?
We all have images and ideas of God that we cherish, constructs that inform our worship, spirituality and practice. Imagine putting those ideas into your God Box, then taking each out and inspecting it. What belongs in the box? What turns out to be unhelpful or even misleading? How do know who God is, what God is like?
Together we will explore two traditional ways of thinking about God—Cataphatic Theology, the “positive” things we can say about God through reason, images, imagination and comparison, and Apophatic, or Negative Theology which begins with the recognition that the uncreated Creator is “no thing” and thus God’s essence is unknowable.
Gilbert Márkus writes:
"Because ‘all things’ only exist because they are created, ‘God’ [who is uncreated] cannot be the name of an existent thing. God therefore cannot literally (proprie) be said to be substance or essence, not have any quantity, quality, relation, place or time. You may want to use the word ‘being’ of God, but it cannot mean simply ‘a being’ in the sense that we refer to existing things as ‘beings’."
So what is left in the Box? What can we say about God? What can we know, and how?
